okay so I just had a text-message conversation with saltwaterlungs

and we were talking about her poetry
which led to improvement
which got me thinking

'do improve and improvisation have the same root??'

because they're spelled similarly so i looked it up

and the word 'improve' comes from some anglo-fr. word 'emprouwer' meaning 'to turn to profit' and 'emprouwer' comes from the latin word 'prode' meaning 'advantageous' (proud comes from that word).

the word 'improvisation' comes from the italian word 'improvviso' (unforseen, unprepared) which in turn comes from the latin 'improvisus' from the prefix 'in-' meaning 'not' and the word 'provisus' meaning 'forseen' (also meaning provided but whatev)

also note that 'empower' does not come from 'emprouwer', apparently William Penn used it in 1690, and its said to come from the prefix 'en-' + power
(and the word power comes from the anglo-fr. word 'pouair' (the noun use of the infinitive 'to be able') from the latin 'potis' meaning powerful (potent comes from that) and powerful in the context of 'a state or nation with international authority')

man I could go on forever about this
ETYMOLOGY IS COOL, YO

(p.s. most of my hastily researched info comes from dictionary.com <dictionary.reference.com/> so if you are a professional etyymologist or something please correct me because i find this fascinating)
